Will Franklin recently highlighted how well the economy is doing in terms of employment, but we'd thought we'd add our two cents worth by chipping in an anecdotal experience from this weekend.
We had called in our order this Saturday to our local Pizza Hut and we opted to pick it up at the store. In the store, on the cash register, our local Pizza Hut franchisee had posted a "Help Wanted" ad for delivery drivers. What made the ad unique was the incentives being offered to attract potential employees into the position.
Now, call us snobbish, but isn't pizza delivery almost by definition one of the lowest-skill required positions in which to enter the workforce? The main requirements would seem to include that the potential employee possess a car for delivering pizzas, have a safe driving record, the ability to make change and a willingness to have said car smell like pizza for the foreseeable future.
For what many people might consider to be an entry-level, near minimum wage type position, our local franchisee is offering potential pizza delivery personnel between $12 and $15 USD per hour (not including tips.) What's more, they're willing to pay a bounty to people who connect them with willing and able drivers!
What kind of bounty? Well, if an individual refers a potential pizza deliver driver to the franchisee and they're hired on, as a thank you, the referrer may have one free medium pizza delivered to them for each week the new delivery driver remains employed. Indefinitely.
From our point of view, it takes quite an economy to produce that kind of incentive package for pizza delivery drivers! Is it any wonder that actual minimum wage workers are truly becoming scarce?
