Drafting the S&P 500 in 3D

Today's post is inspired by architectural and engineering drawings, which take three-dimensional objects and render them into just two, showing different aspects of the objects from a variety of perspectives. Only we're creating an isometric view and standard orthographic projections of the S&P 500's average monthly index value and trailing year dividends per share data from December 1991 through July 2009!

We created the three-dimensional isometric projection our S&P 500 data using Microsoft Excel, enhanced with a Visual Basic macro for generating 3D scatter plots, which we're clearly going to have to play with a lot more!
