The tool presented below was a fun project. It's intended to be a companion to my earlier post A Minor Milestone in Aviation History, and hopefully will help you in selecting one of the major U.S. airlines for your travel needs.
The calculator below determines what charges you may expect to encounter at the airport if you plan to check baggage through on your flight. The calculator will compute the fee for all your excess baggage (baggage you check above the given airline's individual limit) all at once, but will only determine the overweight or oversize charges for one bag at a time. You will have to add up any potential charges for overweight or oversize bags offline to compute your total additional cost above your ticket price for your flight.
About the Results
If you encounter the result "Will Not Accept", it means that your bag exceeds the size, weight or quantity restriction set by the airline in question and must be shipped to your destination through other means. Alternatively, you may need to redistribute the contents of your luggage, change bags, etc. to avoid the restriction.
About The Fees
The computed fees for all airlines presented in the calculator are current for 11 April 2005. Please be aware that these charges are subject to change by the airline at any time, and the calculator's results may be out-of-date as a result.
